Goal setting marks your first point towards success. It’s when you switch from a passive state to being involved in life.

Do you feel as though you are sleepwalking through life? Even though you work hard, do you feel as though you’re not getting what you want? That’s because you don’t have a direction of where you want to go and what you want to achieve. A student may graduate from school and then tertiary education but not feel sure about what exactly they want to do with their life. Adults can work for years and are shocked to reach their 40’s and realise that they aren’t really doing what they want but don’t know how to get there!

When you don’t set goals, you can spend your whole life running around doing tasks, paying bills … yet not achieve anything of merit.  In reality you are just fulfilling other people’s goals, and not your own. IS the fast food industry telling you to eat fast food because you’re “loving it”?? Is the consumer goods industry telling you that you a shampoo with 70% frizz reduction formula because it’ll make your lie better or the fashion industry getting you to buy their clothes because you’ll look cooler and sexier in them?

When you stop to set goals and think about what you want, you break out of auto-pilot and start to live a life that you consciously created.

Top business executives, world class athletes – successful people ALL set goals. That’s because when you set goals, you have a vision to work towards. If you set a time limit and a physical goal, then you have motivation and desire to get to your end game (not somebody else’s).

Ask yourself these questions – where do you want to be a year from now? 3 years from now? 5 years? Is it where you are now? No? Then how will you move forward without setting out a plan or a strategy? It’s not going to miraculously happen if you don’t work on it now. What is your action plan?

Don’t forget that sometimes the plans change – and that’s okay. Often it’s important to review your ideas based on experience or an important fork in the road. What’s important is that you start the journey with a map and desire.

Goals give you focus, where you’re going to direct your energy. If you want to start a business, do your research. Who are leaders in this industry? Are you able to get work experience?

Think of your energy as the input and the results as the output. When you have a goal, you create a focus point where your energy can be channelled to created maximum reward.

Having goals makes you accountable. Rather than just talk, you are now obliged to act. Accountability must be to yourself and nobody else. No one knows the goals you set – only you stand to gain by your goals.

When you set goals, you are also connecting yourself with your innermost desires. They help to motivate you and give you something to strive for. This is especially powerful if you’re not in a good place in life right now. Your goals help remind you of the things you love and to redirect your focus away from the negative and reconnect you with where you want to be.

Henry Ford said, “Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off the goal”

When you are feeling negative and own, it’s usually because you feel as though you have nothing to look forward to. Your goals are what you are striving for – that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Goals help you achieve your highest potential. Without goals, you default to a routine of activities that keep you feeling safe and comfortable each day but familiarity is the nemesis of growth. It stops you from tapping into your infinite potential.  They stretch you beyond your normal realm and help you reach new heights. Don’t settle for anything less than what you desire.

Finally, goals ensure that you get the best out of life.

Whether you want it or not, time passes you by. You were once young being told by your parents and elderly relatives “You’re so young, just enjoy yourself!” but there comes a time where you need to move out of that carefree phase and take your life seriously. That doesn’t mean you have to endure life – it means you should embrace it. You have one life, one body and one beautiful brain.

Ask yourself: what are my goals for this year? Where would I like to be in 3 years? How can I get there? How about 10 year?

If you take time out now to set your goals and a strategy to achieve the, you will experience a meaningful life path as your reach them. Start to articulate who you are now and who you want to be within specified time periods and you’ll be surprised at what you achieve.

On your marks, get set …. GO!
